Shapewear After Pregnancy: When to Start and What to Choose
Many new mothers in Saudi Arabia ask us the same question: when can I start wearing shapewear after birth, and which piece should I choose? This guide answers both, simply. It is general advice, not medical advice. Your doctor knows your recovery best.
First: ask your doctor
Before you wear any shapewear after giving birth, check with your doctor or midwife. This matters most after a caesarean section, because the scar needs to heal before anything presses on it. Many women wait until their postnatal check-up, which is often around six weeks after birth, but your doctor may give you a different timing.
Postpartum belt or shapewear?
- A postpartum belt or binder is a medical support garment. If your doctor recommends one in the first weeks, follow their advice on the type and how long to wear it.
- Brazilian shapewear like Lupo and Liz is made to smooth your shape under clothes. It is not a medical device and does not treat diastasis recti or speed up recovery.
So think of shapewear as the next step: for when you feel ready to go back to your usual abaya, dresses and jeans and want a smoother look.
Which piece to choose after pregnancy
- High-waist bermuda or shaper short: covers the tummy and hips, stays in place and is easy to wear under an abaya. A good first piece. See our bermuda and shaper shorts.
- Seamless pieces: soft, no seams pressing on sensitive skin, and invisible under tight clothes. See the invisible collection.
- Waist corset: firmer, so better saved for later and for occasions, once your doctor is happy with your recovery.
- Breastfeeding? Choose a bottom piece such as a high-waist short or bermuda, so you don't have to take it off to feed.
How to choose the size
- Choose by your weight and height today, not your weight before pregnancy. Your body is still changing.
- If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.
- Lupo and Liz sizes are based on weight and height. Check the size chart on each product page or read our size guide.
- For XL to XXXL, see our plus size shapewear.
How long to wear it
- Start with 2 to 3 hours a day and increase slowly.
- Don't sleep in everyday shapewear.
- Take it off and try a larger size if you feel pain, numbness, pressure on your scar or difficulty breathing.
