How Long Can You Wear Shapewear Each Day? Plus Care Tips
Shapewear is made to be worn, but like shoes, it's more comfortable when you choose the right size and give your body breaks. Here's a simple guide to wearing it comfortably and making it last.
How many hours a day?
- New to shapewear? Start with 3 to 4 hours and increase gradually over a week or two.
- Light and medium control pieces are designed to be comfortable through a normal working day.
- Firm control is best for occasions and a few hours at a time.
- Give your body a break every day, and don't wear the same piece two days in a row without washing.
Can you sleep in shapewear?
We don't recommend sleeping in everyday shapewear. Your body needs time without compression. If a doctor has advised you to wear a compression garment (for example after childbirth or surgery), follow their instructions on the type of garment and how long to wear it.
Signs it's too tight
Take it off and try a larger size if you feel:
- Numbness, tingling or pain.
- Difficulty breathing or heartburn after eating.
- Deep marks that stay long after you take it off.
- The waistband rolling down or the legs digging in.
Shapewear should feel firm but comfortable. If you have a health condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor before wearing shapewear.
How to wash shapewear
- Hand wash in cold water with a mild soap or lingerie detergent.
- Don't wring or twist it. Press the water out gently.
- Dry flat in the shade. Direct sun and dryers damage the elastic.
- No bleach, fabric softener or ironing.
Make it last longer
- Have two pieces and rotate them, so each one has time to recover its shape.
- Store it flat or folded, not hanging by the straps.
- Put it on sitting down, rolling it up gradually, to avoid overstretching the fabric.
